I knew that it shouldn't be that way, and I knew I wanted to help avoid that happening to anyone else. So I started my Hypnobirthing teacher training with the ledgendary Katherine Graves (whilst I was pregnant with my second baby, bonus!) and set about making myself my very own case study.
This re-enforced with iron clad certainty what I knew to be true - Birth is what you make of it. It can be incredible and euphoric and something you feel proud of every day following. Giving birth in the way YOU want to give birth with the knowledge you need to feel empowered to make decisions that are right for you. It's YOUR experience and YOUR choice.
I have since had another baby, supported by a Doula myself, and have continued to learn, grow and develop my skills as a doula to protect people's spaces, advocate for their choices, and enable them to experience the joy and euphoria that lies in birthing and beyond in an informed supported, gentle way.
Well, I suppose, 'The Birth Edit' is me!
With my first pregnancy, I did all the research I thought I needed to, attended antenatal classes, and made a ‘plan’ for my birth - unfortunately, that plan didn’t quite pan out. After the birth of my daughter in July 2019, I investigated my birth and how it ended up the way it did, and I started to discover that although I THOUGHT I was informed, I wasn’t really informed at all.
There were big things that I didn’t know and hadn’t prepared for, but there were also lots of little things that I could have changed that would have helped me to avoid the situation I ended up in.
I felt like I’d been super prepared, so where did I go wrong? If I did so much but learned so little, how could I make sure others didn’t end up in the same position I did?
Here's the thing: there was just too much information. Books, classes, blogs, newsletters, leaflets, shopping lists... where do people start? I felt a real calling to know more and help simplify this education process for new parents.
I needed to know everything and find a way to pass that information on to people like me who didn’t even know they needed it, in a the simplest way possible. A 'one stop shop' and a starting point for people to curate their journey from - and so, The Birth Edit was born.
Pregnancy shouldn't be as overwhelming as it is so often is. It’s about feeling relaxed, confident and happy so your birth and parenting journey can be that way too.
